Creation of Best Stunt Design at the Oscars

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced the introduction of a new Oscar category: Best Stunt Design. This award will debut at the 100th Academy Awards in 2028, honoring films released in 2027 . This decision follows years of advocacy from industry professionals, including director and former stuntman David Leitch and stunt coordinator Chris O'Hara. Their efforts highlighted the critical role of stunt work in filmmaking, from the silent era's pioneers like Buster Keaton to modern action franchises such as "John Wick" and "Mission: Impossible" .

Academy President Janet Yang and CEO Bill Kramer acknowledged the significance of stunt design, stating that it has been "an integral part of filmmaking" since cinema's early days . While the Academy has yet to finalize eligibility criteria and voting procedures, the addition of this category marks a significant step toward recognizing the artistry and technical skill of stunt professionals. The inclusion of Best Stunt Design aligns the Oscars with other major awards, such as the Emmys and Screen Actors Guild Awards, which already honor stunt work. This move not only celebrates the contributions of stunt performers but also reflects the evolving landscape of filmmaking and the Academy's commitment to acknowledging all facets of the industry .
